Differences

Similarities

Differences

In the background there is the sky and it is blue in both covers, and if you look closely you can see stars in both of them.

Next in the foreground you can see the BFG holding the little girl in his hand and he is also writing the same clothes.

Finally the font is bold in both and really stands out.

The background is a light blue in the 2nd poster, and it's the sky in the first one. In the 2nd poster it has a cartoonish and animated look; In the 1st poster it looks real and peaceful. And the BFG is on the right in the 1st one and it's on the left side on the 2nd one

Next there are cliffs in the mid ground on the 1st one and he also has the flute like thing by his foot.

Finally the format is a different color and a lot bigger on the 2nd one.

Follow-up task - blogging our work

In English, we have been working on summarising things we see and read.

Moving to the next level of difficulty, we started looking for similarities or comparisons between texts and book covers, or between movie posters.

Another level of difficulty, we started looking for differences, or contrasts, between texts and book covers, or between movie posters.

Here’s the example we did on “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” covers

Book cover 1 or movie poster 1 pasted

Harry Potter: New book cover unveiled by Welsh artist behind the artwork - Wales Online

Book cover 2 or movie poster 2 pasted

Similarities or comparison between Book cover 1 & Book cover 2

Compare- what is the same?

Firstly, in comparison there are stars in both book covers, in the sky behind Harry and Hogwarts castle and in the steam of the steam train at the train station.

Secondly, there’s a comparison because of the lightning bolt, the symbol of the lightning bolt appears in both covers, in the letter “O” of Potter and on Harry’s forehead in book cover two.

Next comparison is that there is a mixture of serif font and normal font, serif font is used for Harry Potter’s name in both book covers.

Lastly, yellow colour is used in both covers because the colour yellow is a bright, dominant colour on both book covers.  The covers both use yellow to stand out with the background of book cover A standing out against the dark purple and yellow stands out against red in book cover 2.  Yellow is also the colour of lightning, which is a symbol for Harry’s forehead scar.

Contrasts or differences between Book cover 1 & Book cover 2

Contrast- what is different?

Firstly the dominant colours are different and contrasting, with the dark, spooky colours of book cover one, and the bright happy colours of book cover two.

Secondly, the name Harry Potter is random and and in a wavy shape, on book cover one and sort of chaotic, but in contrast, the book cover two, the title is full block serif capitals, very orderly and structured.

Next contrast is the mood of both covers, because book cover one is spooky and scary and book cover two is happy and bright.

Lastly there are five main characters on the cover of book one cover, but in contrast only Harry Potter on the train station 9 ¾ in book cover two
